What are the requirements & restrictions for this domain extension?

For .JP domain, local presence (postal address of the place of residence) in Japan is required for the domain registrant contact. WebNIC can provide partners the local contact service in Japan.

For .CO.JP domain, the registration is restricted to Japanese company and only 1 domain per Japanese company. A company must be registered with the Japanese government. WebNIC can help to apply for trademark protection if registrant does not qualify. Please refer to the following table for more details.

What kind of domain extension does WebNIC offer?

WebNIC offers three options for registering a .CO.JP domain.

  1. Regular .CO.JP Registration: For registrant who already owns Japanese company.
  2. 6 months .CO.JP Protection: For registrant who will set up a company in Japan within 6 months from domain registration.
  3. CO.JP Trademark Protection: For registrant who do not meet the requirement of option 1 and option 2. This option can be used to reserve .CO.JP domains or protect multiple brands or trademark.

WebNIC will charge partners a fixed cost for .CO.JP, and will manually refund if the registration belongs to option 1 or option 2.

What is the terms of registration?

Registration terms of .JP is 1 – 5 years; Registration terms of .CO.JP is 1 year.
However, due to the registry rules, if partners register a .jp domain for more than 1 year, the WHOIS record will only show 1 year registration term instead of 2-5 years.

After the .jp domain expired for the first year, then only the Whois record will display the expiration date for the second year.
Therefore, partners are advised to refer the domain expiration date from the partner central.

Can I delete a domain after registered?

No.
Partners are not allowed to delete .jp domain after registered.

What is the terms of renewal?

Renewal terms of .JP is 1 – 5 years; Renewal terms of .CO.JP is 1, 5, 10 years.

  • .jp domains are managed on a calendar month cycle, which means that all domain expiration dates will occur only on the last day of the calendar month in which it was registered;
  • For example, if partners register a .jp domain on 15 January 2007, the expiration date for this .jp domain will be on 31 January 2008 instead of 15 January 2008.
